Picking the two first (or only one) morae in a sequence of words is a standard way to do contractions in Japanese, and the contracted form often becomes the predominant one. The wikipedia page for “Japanese abbreviated and contracted words” gives several examples such as FAMIRII RESUTORAN (“family restaurant”) becoming FAMIRESU Toukyou Daigaku (University of Tokyo) -> Toudai and one you might have used yourself and that might surprise you POKETTO MONSUTA- (“pocket monster(s)”) -> Pokemon It works for names too: Seto Kanna -> Setokan It’s not systematic though, it depends on how the thing sounds. Actresses usually have cute-sounding nicknames that are not always formed this way. Mitani Akari/Akane is Akarin. Kominato Yotsuha is Yottsun. On the other hand, Kawakami Nanami’s is a variant of the standard scheme: Miinana. And her close friend Kamisaki Shiori was Kamishio. In this case, it’s DORI-MU SHAWA- (“dream shower”, phonetically) that becomes DORISHA (the small tsu at the end marks abrupt ending of the sound).
